It is not unusual for Deborah McNeill to feel or experience the
creation of her Artwork as explosive: It is full of life energy. In
the case of a commissioned piece she explains, whilst listening to
the music "the painting transpires in accordance with the harmony of
the piece (usually classical) chosen by the client, which can be
very subtle and peaceful, but always there is the energy."
Following in the artistic footsteps of her father, although she did
not chose art as her academic career, (in 1982 she received a BA
Hons in Special Hispanic Studies, Hull University, going on to
specialise in TEFL - teaching English as a foreign language) she
continued to draw and paint as a hobby: It was in 2002 when she
first felt an urge and repsonded in a totally metaphysical way to a
classical piece (Mozart) by painting without giving it any thought
whatsoever. Creating a work became a joyous, pure celebration of
chanelling spiritual energy.
The following 2 years were very difficult emotionally: Turning to
painting was still not an obvious direction to take, until again,
encouraged by a friend, who had been impressed by her work she
started a canvass and experienced the same "process". "It began to
take on a life of its own; It was strange: I was totally distracted
at the time, absorbed with 'problems', and this seemed to help. The
less I seemed to participate the easier and more interesting it
became. I initially thought "abstract", but it went towards a
portrait, then before I knew it, I was painting a seascape, a
sunset! quite bizarre!".
Interestingly, this link between her spiritual quest and her
artistic talents and "needs", was still not apparent. Throughout the
90's she accumulated literature on healing, meditation, yoga, etc.,
which led her to discover Buddhism, and that dramatically changed
her way of life - way of living, thinking and being. She also
realised that she was acutely aware of Energy, or energies, at all
times. Her often criticised "over sensitivity" was not, after all,
something that had to be overcome, she decided, but rather something
to be nurtured and developed. Further studies followed; the Eastern
philosophy "Feng Shui", which again led her to the use of both
talents simultaneously; the spiritual and artistic were blending
more and more in her work; in retrospect one might say they slowly
became interractive and interdependent.
She also had certain experiences which seemed to suggest a stronger,
more direct link with the "spiritual world" itself; unsure of how to
deal with these experiences, she felt happy and at ease with them,
but bewildered as to what to do about them.
Then, everything came together for the artist after completing a
first course at the Arthur Findlay College in Stansted, in the
summer of 2006. She initially attended a course with a view to
researching into possible art courses for the future, but now the
way forward was clear. This experience at the A.F. College was very
profound and healing for her, boosting self-confidence, and
immediately, her work reflected this. Mixing and comparing notes,
learning and sharing personal experiences with other like minded
people; discovering more with regard to her gifts and talents,
thanks to the excellent teaching & guidance provided by the College
tutors she came to better understand the process, and how she could
develope and expand this unique way of working.
She could see the opportunities:
She was free to evolve & grow in all areas.
The artist would now paint with crystal clear "spiritual vision".
It was a new direction.
So, a spiritual artist was born through gaining insight, and
"attunement"
in spiritualism.
